Barcelona with a Baby: The Complete Packing Guide
Packing for a trip to Barcelona with a baby can feel overwhelming. You want to be prepared, but you also don't want to lug three suitcases through El Prat airport while juggling a car seat and a screaming toddler.
Here's the good news: Barcelona is an incredibly family-friendly city with excellent pharmacies, supermarkets, and baby shops on nearly every block. You don't need to bring everything from home.
What to Pack: The Essentials
Documents and health
- Passports and EHIC/travel insurance cards
- Any prescription medications your baby takes
- A copy of vaccination records (just in case)
- Your paediatrician's phone number saved in your phone
Clothing
- Pack for the season, but always bring one warm layer — Barcelona evenings can be cool, even in summer
- Swimwear if visiting between May and October (the beaches are fantastic for families)
- A hat with a brim — the sun is strong, especially midday
- Comfortable shoes for you — Barcelona involves a lot of walking on uneven surfaces
In the cabin
- Enough nappies and wipes for the flight plus a few extra hours (delays happen)
- A change of clothes for baby AND for you (trust us on this one)
- Favourite snacks, a bottle or sippy cup, and a dummy if your baby uses one
- One or two familiar toys — don't overdo it
What to Leave at Home
This is where most parents go wrong. These items are heavy, bulky, and easily available in Barcelona:
Skip the stroller — Rent one instead. A Bugaboo Butterfly or Babyzen YOYO will be waiting at your accommodation when you arrive. No oversized baggage fees, no risk of damage in the hold.
Skip the car seat — Unless you're driving from the airport yourself on day one, rent a car seat for just the days you need it. All our seats are EU i-Size certified.
Skip the travel cot — Hotels often provide them, but quality varies wildly. A rented BabyBjorn Travel Crib is a guaranteed good night's sleep.
Skip the high chair — Your Airbnb almost certainly doesn't have one. A clip-on Inglesina Fast takes up zero floor space and works at restaurants too.
Skip bulk nappies and formula — Barcelona has Mercadona supermarkets everywhere with excellent baby product ranges at very reasonable prices.
Barcelona-Specific Tips
- Pharmacies (look for the green cross) stock baby paracetamol (Apiretal), nappies, and basic medicines. They're open late and pharmacists speak English.
- Mercadona is your best friend for baby food, nappies, and wipes at local prices. There's one in almost every neighbourhood.
- The metro has lifts at most stations, but the Gothic Quarter is mostly stairs and cobblestones — a baby carrier is more practical here than a stroller.
- Sun protection is essential year-round. Factor 50 for babies, and stay out of direct sun between 12:00 and 16:00 in summer.
The Smart Approach
Pack light, rent the big gear, and buy consumables locally. You'll spend less than you would on baggage fees, and you'll actually enjoy the journey to Barcelona instead of dreading it.
